Editor's Notebook

January has flown by!  Now we’re into February….Field Day will be here before we know it!!  J  Karen, N2XPG, and myself are making plans to set up again back in our woods.  Anyone is welcome to come over and join us…the more the merrier.

We have permission from AI2W’s wife, Roady to apply for Ed’s call for our club station.  Al, KW2J is preparing the paper work on it.  Karen and I will be visiting Roady soon to have her sign a paper that we must keep on file granting us her permission for Ed’s callsign.

Mike, NG2O, will be gathering the supplies to start our club project, building an interface for PSK31.  I’m not sure whether we’ll have this done in one evening or not, but it’s exciting to see us start a club building project such as this!  Let’s have a good turn out and learn some basics on building.

Don, K2UOB, is back from the 50th state!  Don, has cut checks for Basil, K3QBU, and Jim, KA2AJH, helping to cover their costs of maintaining and upgrading the Ulysses and Wellsville repeaters.  The 145.430 has the new controller on it and sounds great, with just a little tweaking on it yet to do.  And the 147.210 has been “revamped” so to speak; ( the following N2PEE, N2WDS, NG3W, KC2GMH, KC3HJC, WB2MOD gave Jim, KA2AJH a hand moving equipment around, etc. in early Janurary)  when I find any info out from Jim about it, I’ll pass it on in the newsletter.

The Coudersport repeater, 146.685- is back up and running.  The Vortex repeater has been removed and replaced with a GE Exec. running about 50 watts.  The machine now has a PL on it, so if you use it, be sure to put 131.8 PL in your rig.

One more little reminder…if you changed your email address please let Don, K2uob know at – k2uob@arrl.net

Lastly, in this month’s newsletter, I have included the upcoming Hamfests for 2002, and Skywarn frequencies and other information.  I plan on contacting the NWS to see if we can setup a date for an Skywarn session…details will be on the way!

Ok…that’s all I have for this month…anything subjects you would like to write about, send it to me at – n2wds@arrl.net

Here is a picture of our new tee-shirt.

Karen and I will both be wearing them to

the February meeting.  The shirt was seven

dollars plus change or you can buy one of

higher quality…we started cheap just to

see how the logo would come out.

Amateur Radio News

* New ARRL section pages debut: Section News pages for all ARRL sections now

are available on the ARRL Web site. Hams can log on to read the latest news

from their section as well as keep up with what's happening in other

sections around the country. The pages include ARRL section leadership

contact information, links to hamfest and club listings, and a handy section

boundary map. These new pages provide section managers with the means to

communicate rapidly and efficiently with their constituents. ARRL members

who are logged on to the site as members will find their section page link

on the right-hand side of the screen--in the box just above the one that

says "Current Feature Articles." Non-members will find a link to a page that

lists all section pages. "Alert" messages tell hams of late-breaking

section-related news, urgent events, or last-minute changes to publicized

activities. To contribute news or photos, contact your section leadership

http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/org/smlist.html .

========

* CQ VHF to return as a quarterly: CQ VHF will resume publication this

spring as a quarterly magazine, publisher Richard Ross announced today. The

magazine ceased publication in 1999. Longtime CQ magazine "VHF-Plus" Editor

Joe Lynch, N6CL, will be editor of the new quarterly. The first issue is due

out in May. In announcing the publication's return, CQ Communications noted

that the "overwhelming majority" of US hams have license privileges that

primarily permit operation above 50 MHz. "However, the prime focus of the

current ham magazines remains HF," CQ Communications said in a news release

announcing the change. CQ Communications said the revived CQ VHF was

designed with marketplace realities in mind and "will rely primarily on

subscription revenues to meet expenses." CQ Communications said CQ VHF "will

retain the friendly, conversational, look and feel of the original, but its

technical content will be somewhat higher-level." A subscription will be $25

per year in the US.
